Integration

Maintaining one’s mental health and recovering from trauma and mental health disorders requires care of all facets of the self. Often psychedelic integration is characterized by making meaning of what one experienced while in an altered state and applying those insights to one’s understanding of the self and how one approaches daily life. Another important aspect of integration is in using the opportunity of increased neural plasticity to work on creating better habits that can bolster our mental health after we are out of the treatment phase. By making these small shifts to take better care of ourselves, we increase our resiliency to the stressors of life and, in doing so, create lasting benefits to our mental health. Given the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and spirit there is significant overlap in the suggested integration activities in each category below. However, there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach. It can be helpful to consider the areas of one’s life that are lacking and set an intention to take the smallest step to improve this area of life on a daily basis. But don’t get discouraged if the changes don’t stick right away. Coming back to an intention over and over again is the way that progress is made.
